He works eclectically in all media, and exploits art as a tool for critical investigations of reality and all the clichés that our view of reality is made of. Humor is an integral part of his expression that makes his often moral statements easier to swallow, like the sugar covering on a bitter pill. Jes Brinch lives and works in Hanoi, Vietnam, from where he finds a wide range of ready made objects and materials, and he often uses cultural differences and misunderstandings as fuel for art works, as it is the case with this work for DUNK 3d Editions; “The year of the rat” is made of modified Chinese plastic sculptures, which depict two rats sitting on a piece of corn, enjoying their wealth. The sculpture is a symbol of prosperity, supposed to bring the owner good luck and wealth. The artist has pimped the sculpture with some extra gold, soot and lacquer, and has added golden chicken bones, which add an element of crisis and death to the sculpture, consequently making it more realistic.
